London Sizzles

That was the headline on the London paper this morning…

So after our late arrival, we had a full schedule of sightseeing planned. It kicked off with a walking tour to see the changing of the Guard. This tour took us to the different places where the guard change takes place, and gives a bit of the history of it. This was a good tour, but Britain (and all of Europe) is under a severe heat wave this week, and it was HOT. We finished the tour and headed back to the Tower (after a stop at Boots Pharmacy for Berocca and sunblock) to watch The Gunpowder Plot.

The Gunpowder Plot tells the story of Guy Fawkes and his followers and their plot to blow up Parliament. You move through the experience with actors guiding and interacting with you, and virtual reality headsets adding a layer to the experience. It was a fun and unique play, and brought the tower to life. We then had reservations at The Narrow, and Gordon Ramsay restaurant in Limehouse, downriver. Although the food was good, Covid staffing shortages have played havoc on the typical Gordon Ramsay customer service.

After dinner (and getting changed) we went back to the tower to watch the Ceremony of the Keys. I have written about it before, but this time was different. It used to be by “special invitation,” meaning that you would email the tower 6 months in advance (I did it almost a year in advance last time) requesting the tickets, and your requested dates. You would hear back a few days or weeks later with your reply and how to submit your booking fee. Now, it’s all done online, and they allow about 50-60 people in versus the 10-12 before. It’s not as intimate and special experience any more, which makes me sad. I guess the secret is out…
