Sticky toffee pudding

The Sticky Toffee Pudding Quest
2 years ago in Las Vegas Travis and I ate at Gordon Ramsay Steak, where the signature dessert is Sticky Toffee Pudding with Browned Butter ice cream (the ice cream comes shaped like a stick of butter, and you get a little gravy boat full of toffee sauce to put over all of it). I was excited for it, but Travis is skeptical of new foods, and wasn’t too sure.

For those of you who don’t know, sticky toffee pudding isn’t what we think of as pudding at all, but a steamed cake. It’s made with dates as the sweetener, so it’s got a sticky sweetness that tastes like molasses, only not as harsh. You then smother the whole cake with caramel and serve it with ice cream or custard (what we call “hard sauce”). It’s fantastic, and makes one very full after steak and ale pie.

After Las Vegas, Travis was hooked. We’re now on a quest to find the best Sticky Toffee Pudding. Surprisingly, the 3rd best (out of 4) came from the local grocery store, Waitrose. The best was at the Old Mill in Salisbury. In a twist of irony, Bread Street Kitchen, a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, didn’t have it.

Yesterday, we crossed the Irish Sea. There doesn’t seem to be much of it around here. Our quest continues…
