European motorcycles

Motorcycles in Europe

They are no safer with a higher speed limit. They are more popular, however. On our way to Poland, we were passed by 3 motorcyclists on the shoulder. About 45 minutes up the road, we heard an emergency vehicle go by us. Soon, we were stopped. A helicopter started circling, and they let all,of the cars ahead of us go by. As the front car, we were treated to a motorcycle accident scene. This included a medic “accident response” vehicle, 2 police vehicles and the helicopter with a doctor aboard.  We watched as they triaged the girl, and evacuated her. I had an able guide in Travis, who kindly explained everything. Apparently, what happened was the motorcycle was trying to merge before a construction zone, and either was going too fast, misjudged his distance, or wasn’t seen by the SUV he side-swiped. The entire right side of his bike is a tangled mess, as is the right side of his passenger. Hopefully he has learned his lesson and will be more attentive in the future.

We are back on the road, 30 minutes behind schedule, but our vacation is not ruined, as the unfortunate motorcyclist’s was.
